Two trips with my own little ones, every Wailea lobby toured, one strong opinion per resort. This is the island where the right booking *is* the vacation.
Why families choose Maui
Because on Maui, the resort is the trip — and Maui's resorts are the best family lineup in Hawaii. Wailea and Kaanapali hold miles of calm-morning beach, pool complexes that range from serene to full water park, and kids clubs that buy parents an actual dinner.
Winter adds the humpbacks: December through April, whales breach close enough to watch from breakfast. Add Haleakala's sunrise (reservation required — or take the crowd-free sunset instead) and the Road to Hana for families with older kids, and Maui covers every speed from zero to adventure.
The two beach zones
Wailea (south): sunniest, calmest, most polished, closest to the airport. Where I send most families with little kids. Kaanapali (west): the classic lively resort beach — three golden miles, Black Rock snorkeling, more action. Kapalua and Napili, further north, trade action for quiet coves.

Know before you book

The Maui questions families ask first
Is Wailea or Kaanapali better for families?
Wailea for little kids: calmer morning water, sunnier weather, a shorter airport drive, and the most polished resorts. Kaanapali for families who want energy — three miles of lively beach, Black Rock snorkeling, and the Beachwalk. Both work; they feel like different vacations.
When can you see whales on Maui?
December through April, with the peak in January through March. Humpbacks winter in the shallow channel off West and South Maui, and sightings from shore — even from resort lanais — are routine. Boat tours get closer; kayak tours get closest.
Should we do the Road to Hana with young kids?
With toddlers, usually skip it — 620 curves is a lot of car seat. With kids eight and up it is a spectacular day: waterfalls, bamboo forest, black sand at Waianapanapa (reserve ahead). Leave early, pick five stops rather than twenty, and consider staying a night in Hana.
How far ahead should we book a Maui resort?
Six to nine months for school-break dates — connecting rooms and suites at the Wailea properties go first. Shoulder-season weeks forgive four to six months. If Haleakala sunrise is on the list, that reservation opens exactly 60 days out and vanishes in minutes.
